Smoking near newborn babies.
I am eight months pregnant and I managed to give up smoking early in my prenancy, despite the fact that all my friends and family smoke frequently near me. How can I get them to stop? I am worried for the health of my baby. Most people my age smoke, should I cut myself off from all my friends for the sake of my child ?
It is very important that your baby lives in a clean, healthy environment. It is absolutely essential that he doesn't become a passive smoker, as it can cause numerous health problems, some of which may only come to light during later life. Unfortunately, anyone who is addicted to smoking, just like anyone who is addicted to drugs, can be very selfish, putting their addiction before anything else. You must make them respect the fact that they cannot smoke in your home or near your baby, which may mean you find out who your real friends are! If they must smoke around you, make it clear that although you want to continue the relationship, this is not acceptable. Your true friends should respect your wishes.
Explain the harm they are doing, not only to their own bodies, but to yours and your baby's as well.
They may realise at the time, but you are doing them a favour. Be firm and determined on this important issue.
