Sticking-Out Ears
My 4 year old son, has ears which really stick out. I want to get them pinned back, not because I think he looks silly, but because I don't want him to get teased when he goes to school… please help.
Bat Ear' as it is medically known, is a common problem, and octoplasties are one of the few cosmetic procedures carried out on children. It is usually suggested that parents wait until their child is five years old, as by then, the ear has practically reached adult size. I can understand your dilemma, worry not and speak to your GP. The procedure is a simple one, but it is carried out under general anaesthetic. The surgeon will weaken the cartilage of the ear and bend it into a new position, flat against the head. Stitches are then used to hold the ear in place. It takes several months for the results to be seen, and it is important to protect the stitches from being damaged.
