Oprah Winfrey came from a poor background in Mississippi. A successful student, she obtained a full scholarship to Tennessee State University.
Over the years, she's built up a media empire, the flagship of which is her talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show. Through this show, she established a tone based on confidence, spirituality and personal development.
She quickly founded her own production company, Harpo ("Oprah" spelt backwards), and invested in helping victims of childhood sexual abuse, after confessing on her own show that she had been a victim herself during her childhood.

As a result of her TV productions, Oprah Winfrey was the richest African American person of the 20th century, and the first black woman to become a multi-millionaire!
The records don't stop there: according to Forbes magazine, she was the most powerful celebrity in the world in 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2010.

Since 2006, Oprah Winfrey has openly supported Barack Obama. According to several studies, she earned the Democratic candidate more than 1 million votes during the 2008 Democratic presidential primary!
