You've developed an effective aversion technique when a stressful situation rears its head: run for the hills and hide so it can't bother you. This behaviour no doubt stems from the way you dealt with your worries during childhood, you use it as a sheild whenever a problem crops up that could upset the balance. Your instinct for self-preservation take several forms, maybe you drown your anxiety by diving into a good book, throwing yourself into your social life, sport or another diverting pastime. When you had to take exams at school, you'd do everything you could so as not to think about them so you could carry on having fun until the last minute. Taking your mind off it reduced and sometimes completely eliminated the stress itself... for a time. It's great to have fun and forget about your worries, but make sure that you're aware of your fears and are not just trying to ignore them, so that you can change your behaviour over time, to strengthen yourself and face up to things. Think about why you find it so hard to prepare yourself for stressful events, tackle them head-on and change the way you deal with stress.
