6th August - Jessica Ennis wins Olympic heptathlon gold
Great Britain’s Jessica Ennis is the world’s greatest all-round female athlete, following her gold medal win in the Olympic heptathlon at the London 2012 Games.
The 26-year-old delivered under the enormous weight of expectation, with a series of brilliant personal bests that left her rivals helpless.
Yesterday the Sheffield born athlete was crowned world champion in front of an adoring home crowd after setting a new British record.
A tearful Jessica told BBC Sport: “I am just so happy. I want to thank everyone who has supported me, they have been amazing. I am so thankful that everyone has helped me all this way. I just had to give it everything at the end. I just wanted to make sure I gave them something and brought it all home.
“I told myself at the start that I'm only going to have one moment to do this in front of a crowd in London and I just wanted to give them a good show.”
