Sherlock new series: Benedict Cumberbatch spotted filming dramatic scenes in Bristol

Sherlock may have fallen to his death at the end of the last series, but it looks like - in typical style - he's somehow survived.

Benedict Cumberbatch - who plays the super sleuth - and the rest of the cast were seen filming scenes for the next series of Sherlock in Bristol on Monday night.

The 36-year-old was joined by Martin Freeman - who plays his on-screen sidekick Doctor Watson - and Martin's real-life partner Amanda Abbington.

The actors braved the freezing conditions to film a bonfire scene in Portland Square in Bristol.

The square was apparently crowded with excited onlookers taking snaps on their phones.

Twitter was filled with pictures and even spoilers as people outlined details of what was happening.

It was reported that Benedict ran through a crowd of extras towards the fire, shouting "move, move, move!"

He was also involved in a motorbike stunt, although he apparently left the serious action to a body double.

Earlier this month, Benedict revealed to the Radio Times that he and his co-star Martin are signed on to do a fourth season.

He is enjoying being a part of the show so much he doesn't want it to end.

He said: "We love doing it as we are doing it at the moment in the format we are doing it.

"I'd love to keep it going for as long as possible, I think we all would."

He continued: "It just depends on Martin and I's availability, how long we can keep it going. It depends on Steven's ability. I'd love to keep it going."

He went on to talk about how it is his character manages to escape death following his fall from a rooftop.

Not divulging any details, he simply said: "You are in for an absolute stonker. It's going to be a treat.

"It's a terrific episode."
