Former Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens gets a Hollywood makeover

Dan Stevens was once only known for playing Matthew Crawley on Downton Abbey.

But following his departure and tragic death on the hit ITV show at Christmas, he’s begun to carve himself a career in Hollywood.

He's not been gone from the quintessentially British period drama for long, but the 30-year-old father-of-two has already undergone a Hollywood makeover.

Gone is the pasty English complexion and strawberry blonde hair that Downton fans are used to seeing, in favour of sleek dark locks and a subtle golden tan.

The Croydon-born star also seems to have slimmed down, shaved off the period drama sideburns and is now sporting sexy stubble.

Dan debuted his new look at a TAG Heuer watch event on Thursday in New York City, looking very confident as he posed on the red carpet.

The transformation is said to be for his role in upcoming film A Walk Among The Tombstones, which also stars Irish actor Liam Neeson.

After shooting is wrapped on the crime drama, Dan is set to go straight into filming The Fifth Estate with Benedict Cumberbatch and Summer In February with Dominic Cooper.

The in-demand star - who recently finished a sold-out run in Broadway play The Heiress alongside Oscar-nominee Jessica Chastain - seems to be keen to make the most of the worldwide fame that comes with starring in Downton Abbey.

Clearly enjoying new challenges since leaving the ITV period drama, Dan told Phoenix magazine: “Theatre, when it is at its best, takes a lot of beating - the live experience and the shared collective experience of live storytelling is really special when it is good.

“Particularly here in New York because the audiences are amazing, very vocal and very engaged, and that makes theatre very exciting.”

Speaking about his return to the silver screen, Dan explained: “I have only recently got interested in film, and it is a strange way of working in many ways.

“But actually, when it is at its best, it’s quite an extraordinary way of working between a director and an actor, to really explore an inner life.

“When the camera is pointed the right way you can pick up extraordinary things and tell a story in an amazing way.”
