Demi Lovato admits her X Factor job came too soon after rehab stay

Demi Lovato has revealed that she thinks she should have had more time away from the spotlight following her stay in rehab.

The former Disney star was admitted for treatment at the end of 2010 and was released in early 2011 after receiving help for "physical and emotional issues".

Demi had suffered a breakdown while on tour with ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas, which allegedly saw her punch a backing dancer.

She later admitted she cut herself to deal with her negative feelings and also suffered from bulimia.

The following year, Demi was offered a job as a judge on Simon Cowell's US X Factor, which saw her catapulted back into the public eye in autumn 2012.

Though she proved a popular addition to the show, Demi thinks the new role probably came too soon after her stint in rehab.

She told Cosmo On Campus: "I don’t think I was ready when I started on The X Factor. In an ideal situation I would have maybe waited a year or more [after coming out of treatment].

“I dived into work really quickly and maybe that wasn’t the best idea at the time, but the place I am in today is so much better than I could have ever imagined, so I’m really glad.”

Demi, 20, now speaks openly about her battle with bulimia and hopes to be a role model for young women who might have similar issues.

She said: "I was about 12 or 13 when I developed my eating disorder, and at that time nobody in the public eye talked about their body issues.

"I feel that if someone had admitted they had a problem, then I wouldn’t have gone down that route myself.

"That’s my goal in talking about my problems. I want to be the person for other girls that I needed to admire when I was looking for help and strength."

She added: "It’s OK to love your body the way it is and it’s OK to reach out for help if you have drug and alcohol problems, or if you’re self-harming or being bullied.”

The full interview appears in the spring term issue of Cosmo on Campus (also available in digital edition), available from today.
