Golden Globe nominations: Downton Abbey leads the way for a British invasion

Downton Abbey looks set to continue its success at the Golden Globes after it's picked up a fistful of nominations for the second year running.
The British period drama is up for the best television drama series at the US awards, in a category that also includes Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad and Homeland.
Dame Maggie Smith - who plays Violet Crawley in Downton - has been nominated for best supporting actress in a mini-series or motion picture made for TV.

Not only that, but Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary Crawley, is up for best actress in a television drama series.
Cult favourite Downton won the award for best television mini-series last year, proving its popularity stretches across the pond.
Executive producer Gareth Neame said: "This continued run of success for Downton in the US awards demonstrates the affection for the show in America and shows that British writing, acting and production can match the very best of Hollywood."

But Downton's not the only British export to be flying the flag.
London-born Damian Lewis is up for best actor in a television drama series. He'll be pitted against Mad Men's Jon Hamm and Boardwalk Empire star Steve Buscemi.
British actor Daniel Day-Lewis has been nominated for best actor in a drama for his part in Steven Spielberg's Civil War epic Lincoln, which has picked up seven nods in all.
And South Londoner Adele's also been recognised after her James Bond track, Skyfall, was nominated for best original song in a motion picture.
Depite all the British success, our native comedian Ricky Gervais won't be hosting the awards, which puts an end to his three-year stint.
Instead, US comedy stars Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will be fronting the ceremony, which will be held in Los Angeles on 13th January.

Does Downton deserve its nominations?
Yes - It's Britain's best TV show by far
No - I don't see what all the fuss is about
I prefer Homeland
