Gerard Butler is one of the most captivating Hollywood stars. Those gorgeous blue eyes and the Scottish accent could not fail to melt hearts.
He has also proven himself to be a tenacious and versatile actor, taking on the roles of a vampire, phantom, roman and a bounty hunter to date. We can only imagine what we will see him in next!
Gerard Butler was born 13 November 1969 in Glasgow. His parents divorced when he was just two years old.
He studied Law at Glasgow University and is a qualified Lawyer. After graduating, he took on several small jobs, but his ambition was to become an actor.
He was noticed in a café by the actor Steven Berkoff, who offered him a role in the Shakespeare play, “Coriolan”.
After having acted in several plays, Gerard Butler landed a role in his first film “Mrs Brown” (1997), a film about Queen Victoria, where he played the younger brother of the character played by Billy Connolly.
He then went on to have a small part in the James Bond film “Tomorrow Never Dies” (1997).
However, his breakthrough came in the American TV miniseries “Attila” where he played “Attila the Hun”.
It was on the back of demo tapes he sent of his performance in this miniseries that he landed the role of “Dracula” in the film “Dracula 2001” (2000).
His next role would be a small role starring alongside Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale in the big budget film “Reign of Fire”, a film set in the future where humanity has almost been wiped out by deadly fire-breathing dragons.
In 2003, he starred alongside Angelina Jolie in “Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life”.
However, it was in 2004 that he took his biggest gamble, starring as “The Phantom” in the film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s stage musical “The Phantom of the Opera”.
The gamble paid off with his performance in the filming winning international, critical acclaim.
His other projects included “Dear Frankie” (2004), “The Game of Their Lives” (2005) and “Beowulf and Grendel” (2005).
In 2006, he starred as Leonidas, the Head of the Spartan Army in the spectacular epic “300”, a story of war between the Greeks and Persians in 480 BC in which all 300 members of the Spartan army were killed. With a very tanned and toned Butler, who delivers a phenomenal performance, this film is not to be missed!
In 2007 he starred in two very different films; crime thriller “Butterfly on Wheel” alongside Pierce Brosnan and Maria Bello and the romantic drama “P.S. I Love You” alongside Hilary Swank.
In 2008, he was on the bill for “Nim’s Island”, where he plays a fictional character in the stories between a father and a daughter.
He also starred as “One Two”, a small time criminal in London’s underground criminal world in Guy Ritchie’s “RocknRolla”.
In 2010, he starred alongside Jennifer Aniston in the romantic comedy “The Bounty Hunter”, where he plays “The Bounty Hunter” who is given the task of tracking down his ex-wife (played by Aniston).
In the same year he played the voice of “Stoick the Vast” in the animated film “How to Train Your Dragon”. He is currently in the middle of filming the sequel “How to Train Your Dragon 2”.
In 2011, he returned to a warrior role when he starred opposite Ralph Fiennes in the film “Coriolanus” and in the film “Machine Gun Preacher”, a biographical film about Sam Childes (played by Butler), a former drug dealer, who helps to save the children in the Sudan from becoming child soldiers in the Civil War.
Butler has three films out this year, so look out for him in “Movie 43”, a comedy in which he stars with Kate Winslet and Richard Gere; “Of Mice and Mavericks”, a film about surfing; and “Playing the Field”, where he stars alongside Uma Thurman and Catherine Zeta-Jones as a failed professional footballer, who coaches his son’s soccer teams, but is unable to keep his eyes, or hands, off his team’s yummy mummies!
There is little known about Gerard Butler’s personal life. He has been linked to Naomi Campbell and is a very close friend of Cameron Diaz. Could this mean the sexy Scot is single?
