WATCH: The truth behind Justin Bieber's stolen footage dramaJustin Bieber ensured that he hit headlines last week after his computer and camera were stolen backstage at a concert in Washington.
The teen superstar was allegedly devastated at the loss, and it wasn’t long before his personal footage began making its way onto the internet, including a rumoured naked photo.
The distraught 18-year-old tweeted: “Sucks when u take personal footage and people don’t respect your privacy.”
It then appeared that the thief who took his belongings was cruelly teasing the Believe singer on Twitter, writing that he was going to release damning footage of him that would ruin his career.
But it appears that all the drama and hysteria was merely a publicity stunt, with the ‘stolen’ footage actually being Justin’s latest music video featuring rapper Nicki Minaj. The thief, called Gexwy on Twitter, had declared that the scandalous stolen film would be released at noon on Friday, but what he uploaded was a link to Beauty And A Beat. Gexwy wrote: “I told you I would post something WORTH watching and talking about @justinbieber @NICKIMINAJ”, adding on the link to the video which was then retweeted by Justin to his nearly 30 million followers. Before retweeting Gexwy, Justin wrote a statement about his recent troubles. The boyfriend of Selena Gomez said: "Since I was 14 I have had a lot of things said about me, from dying, to taking hormones, to dying again, to stuff about my family, to saying I had a baby with a woman I never even met. nude pics, drugs, my family, my character... but today... today i get to be in on it..." He then added: "So to all of you... enjoy. Let's go for the 10 million mark! Me, @NickiMinaj - this is #BEAUTYandaBEAT." The video, which has so far notched up over a whopping 20 million views on YouTube, begins with the personal footage that was supposedly stolen from Justin and then uploaded to a blog by the 'thief'. Then it shows Justin in the music video that he wrote, directed, shot and starred in. He holds a camera up and sings as he walks around a pool party, which features synchronised swimmers, dancers and acrobats. In one sequence the millionaire popstar shows off his dancing ability with some complex dance moves, before the camera jumps underwater where he sings. He then joins Nicki on an elevated stage for her rap. The elaborate publicity stunt has provoked a mixed reaction from Bieber’s fans, but it has certainly ensured maximum exposure for his new song.
