2012 Paralympics: Kate Middleton celebrates Team GB's 7 golds

Kate Middleton has proved herself to be quite the good luck charm to Team GB.

This weekend she was on hand to witness British Paralympians win a massive seven gold medals and even had the opportunity to present one to Welsh discus thrower Aled Davies.

Speaking of his delight at being presented with the gold medal after an emotional competition, Aled told Radio 5 Live: “It was very special.”

He jokingly added that the back of his head had made it onto most front pages of the newspapers this morning, but he "understood" why they preferred to show Kate's face.

The Duchess of Cambridge also witnessed Britain’s mixed coxed fours crew cross the finish line first at Eton Dorney.

Cyclists Anthony Kappes and pilot Craig MacLean won the gold and Neil Fachie and pilot Barney Storey took the silver in an all-British tandem final.

Britain’s Paralympics dressage team matched their Olympic counterparts, winning gold for the fifth consecutive Games.

24-year-old Sophie Christiansen won individual gold in Grade Ia, the category for dressage riders who have the highest level of disability.

Her team members Sophie Wells and Deborah Criddle also achieved silver in their grades, adding to the gold won by Natasha Baker and silver won by Lee Pearson on Saturday.

But Sophie, who suffers from cerebral palsy and took up riding as a form of physiotherapy aged six, wasn’t told of the team victory until she had finished her individual event.

Her coaches were conscious of not heaping extra pressure on the young athlete.

Upon finding out the spectacular news, Sophie said: “I’m so pleased, it’s amazing. I’m welling up.

"All our riders are among the best in the world - we deserve gold because of them and our support staff.”

The sixth gold of the day went to 16-year-old swimmer Jessica-Jane Applegate, who has Asperger’s syndrome and beat out all her other competitors to win the women’s 200m freestyle.

Final gold of the weekend was won in the athletics stadium as David Weir confirmed his status as the greatest Great Britain wheelchair athlete.

He clinched his third successive Paralympic Games gold medal in the men’s 5,000m TS4.

This weekend there were medals across athletics, rowing, dressage, table tennis, swimming and cycling - with the overall total of Paralympic medals now standing at 17 golds, 24 silver and 15 bronze.

Hopefully Kate will continue to be the lucky charm for Team GB for the rest of the Games!
