Doctor Who star Matt Smith says a female Doctor is unlikely

Doctor Who star Matt Smith has weighed in on the debate as to whether there will ever be a female star in the title role of the hit sci-fi show.

Despite rumours of a possible female Doctor floating around since the 1980s, so far no woman has played the famous Timelord but there have been countless male incarnations.

Current Doctor Matt is open to the possibility of The Doctor shifting sexes, but the 29-year-old actor doesn’t think it’s likely to happen in the near future.

He told Themarysue.com: "I mean, it would change the role because she would be a woman so when you put her in a room full of men, it's a different scenario than if you put a man in a room full of men, because she's a different sex.

“Would it change the fundamentals of the character? No. But it's an interesting idea, if the Doctor's a woman, does she have a Doctor baby? Is there a mini-Doctor? I don't know, who knows?”

The 11th Doctor in the long-running series went on to suggest possible names for the ground-breaking part: “I think there are many actresses that could play it because there are so many wonderful actresses.

"It could be... Charlize Theron is pretty kick-ass, isn't she?”

Adding: “They just have to find a brilliant actress. I never see that happening any time soon to be honest."

While Matt Smith ponders the idea of a female Doctor, show bosses will no doubt be celebrating as the seventh series debuted to record numbers around the world.

The opening episode Asylum Of The Daleks drew in 6.4 million viewers in the UK and 1.55 million in the US, making it BBC America’s highest-rated show, and it also beat its previous ratings figures in Canada and Australia.

Do you think there should be a female Doctor?
Yes - Why the hell not!
No - It would ruin the show.
