The London 2012 Olympic closing ceremony: A spectacular show

The Olympics came to a rocking end last night with a three hour storming closing ceremony.

The show kicked off with the capital’s landmarks wrapped in giant newsprint and as Big Ben rang out, actor Timothy Spall - dressed as Winston Churchill - got things started.

Featuring the Spice Girls atop black cabs, Take That, One Direction, Madness and The Kinks’ Ray Davies, it was an event that saw the giants of British pop music past and present take to the stage.

Great British musicians came back from the dead as Yoko Ono provided exclusive new footage of her late husband John Lennon singing Imagine, accompanied by a choir from his home city of Liverpool.

A hologram of Freddie Mercury brought the rock god back to life to perform alongside his band Queen, before Jessie J took over lead singer duties and belted out We Will Rock You.

Controversial British artist Damien Hirst turned the Union Jack into a huge piece of pop art, and some 70,000 volunteers were showered in petals as a tribute to their hard work in creating the unforgettable opening and closing ceremonies.

British supermodels Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Lily Cole took to the stage along with a host of notable fashion models to showcase the best of British design, sporting outfits from Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood.

Other acts who performed included Elbow, Kaiser Chiefs, Liam Gallagher and George Michael.

Even comedian Russell Brand took the opportunity to show off his vocal skills as a Willy Wonka lookalike, although the biggest cheers of the night were for 69-year-old Monty Python comic Eric Idle, who sung a riotous rendition of Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life.

The Who drew down the curtain on the whole show with a rousing singalong to their great sixties hit My Generation, followed by ballerina Darcy Bussell and 200 dancers who performed Spirit Of The Flame as the Olympic cauldron was extinguished.

We're REALLY going to miss the Olympics!
