Police arrest teenager over Tom Daley Twitter abuseA teenage boy has been arrested after Olympic diver Tom Daley received a string of hateful messages on Twitter.
Tom wrote after his efforts in the final: “#gutted so sorry everyone but we tried our best and you can't afford to miss a dive at this standard...bring on individual!” Twitter user "Rileyy69" then targeted Tom, telling him he'd let his dad down.
Tom's father Rob - who the youngster described as his "inspiration" - died from brain cancer last year. Tom responded to Rileyy69's message: "After giving it my all... you get idiots sending me this..." He then Re-Tweeted the post, which caused uproar on the social networking site and soon had thousands of users campaigning to get the troll removed from the site. Rileyy69 soon apologised to Tom, saying he was "just annoyed" - but when he didn't get a reply his anger escalated again. He wrote: "Why don't you respond to me you pr*ck stop getting me hate alright I've said I'm sorry now f*ck off." He even went on to threaten to kill the sportsman: "I'm going to find you and i'm going to drown you in the pool you cocky tw*t your a nobody people like you make me sick." Dorset police have confirmed they've arrested someone for the vile abuse. A police spokesman said: "A 17-year-old man was arrested by Dorset Police officers in the early hours this morning at a guesthouse in the Weymouth area on suspicion of malicious communications. "He is currently helping police with their inquiries." Tom told the BBC before the Olympics that he'd love to take home a medal for his beloved dad. He said: "Winning a medal would make all the struggles that I’ve had worthwhile. It’s been my dream since a very young age to compete at an Olympics. "I’m doing it for myself and my dad. It was both our dreams from a very young age. I always wanted to do it and Dad was so supportive of everything. It would make it extra special to do it for him." No doubt the whole of Great Britain will be cheering twice as loud for Tom in the individual diving event. |
