X Factor's Christopher Maloney quits Twitter after death threatsX Factor star Christopher Maloney has quit Twitter after he was bombarded with a series of chilling death threats.
The Liverpudlian singer was targeted by a number of X Factor viewers who were incensed after he managed to stay in the competition at the expense of favourite-to-win Ella Henderson, who was sent packing from the show last week.
It appears that the abuse against Chris ramped up after favourites Ella and James Arthur ended up in the bottom two. Before quitting Twitter, the 34-year-old crooner told his fans that he was leaving the social networking site in the run-up to the show. Chris explained: “Ello guys, taking a break from twitter for a bit, need to concentrate on my songs for this week. Ope u understand, thanks 4 ur support Xx." The online hate campaign - which has included tweets telling him to commit suicide - is just the latest obstacle that Chris has had to face on this year’s X Factor. He has been universally criticised by viewers, panned by his fellow contestants in the press and even Simon Cowell has reportedly said that he wants him out of the competition. The X Factor hopeful went on to write: “All the negativity and crap I’ve been getting - people trying to bring me down and maybe force me to quit - it’s not going to happen. No way. I’ve worked too hard just for somebody to take it away from me.” The online abuse included one nasty user who tweeted: “CHRISTOPHER MALONEY KILL YOURSELF.” Another wrote: “Im so f*cking angry im going to f*cking kill christopher maloney what a bloody fix ugh.” A subsequent viewer threatened: “Christopher Maloney I will hunt you down and I will kill you. You should feel so guilty you fat orange turd. #xfactor.” Many Twitter users echoed the same sentiments, which has concerned show bosses and they have complained to the social networking site. According to The Metro they are also considering contacting the police over the matter. A spokesperson for the ITV1 show said: “The welfare of our contestants is our key priority and we work with them to provide what support is needed.” This week will see Christopher battle it out for a place in the final alongside James Arthur, Union J, Jahmene Douglas and Rylan Clark. |
