Tell me something I don’t know. The Observer’s Food Monthly recently announced that Moro (34-36 Exmouth Market, London EC1, 020 7833 8336) was voted ‘Best Restaurant’ by their readers. I don’t want to sound superior or anything but I’ve been going there for years and have been known to almost bully friends to get themselves along to this earthy, eclectic eaterie that excels in a tantalising hybrid of north African and Spanish dishes (I nearly fell out with one mate who declared “It’s not that impressive!”).
To my mind, and anyone else who appreciates the sheer versatility of harissa, the owners, husband and wife, Sam and Sam Clark (yes, they are both called Sam!) do inspired things with sherry, pomegranates and jamon. Their charcoal grilled lamb and signature yoghurt cake will send you almost ga-ga with appreciation, and their house red beats most other restaurants’ top dollar option.
OK, so it is a bit cramped and a bit noisy but that’s what happens when loads of people are having a good time at once. It’s also not pretentious, or particularly fashionable, but it is consistently excellent. There’s only one thing left to do: book a table before everyone else does.
