for women who have already had children:
Lots of women use the pill during their twenties, then start
coming off it in their thirties. "Half of my patients choose
inter-uterine devices as their preferred method of contraception
after having their first child, " explains gynaecologist
Dr Tebeka.
For women who have already had children, the coil holds plenty of advantages.
One of the most important is the freedom from the constraint
of taking a pill every day, as the coil only needs replacing
every five years.
Barrier method:
Placed directly into the womb, IUDs block the egg's way, preventing
it from embedding itself in the womb for fertilisation. It
doesn't have any effect whatsoever on our libido.
"Thanks to the IUD, I feel like I've got my old sex life back
- I missed that sudden desire for lusty sex at certain times
of the month while I was on the pill!" explains Karen.

Bleeding:
The IUD can sometimes cause problems for women who have heavy
periods, bleeding tends to become heavier while the coil is
in the womb.
"While I was using the coil, my periods lasted for more than
a week, which absolutely exhausted me and left me without
any desire to make love at all. All I wanted to do was sleep,"
explains Daisy.
A foreign body:
The IUD can have a psychological effect on a relationship,
sometimes husbands can find it hard to accept the idea of
the presence of a foreign body in women's bodies. Fear of
harming themselves, or their partners can often be hard to
overcome.
