The Contraceptive Patch, or Evra :

The contraceptive patch was approved for use in the EU in 2002 and has been available in the UK since 2003.

What is it?
It works in exactly the same way as the pill, but instead of being swallowed, the pregnancy-preventing hormones are released into the skin from a light pink 5cm x 5cm sticky patch, worn on the body.

Who is it for?
The patch is suitable for anybody who can take the pill, as the long-term side-effects are the same.

How do you use it?
On the first day of your period, stick a patch to a clean, dry, hairless area of your skin, anywhere other than your breasts. The arms, buttocks, thighs and abdomen are all popular choices.
The patch stays on for seven days, when you change it for another one. After three patches, you have a week off, in the same way as the pill, before starting again.
