The Vaginal Ring, or Nuvaring
The vaginal hormone ring has been extensively
trialled in other countries and is set to be
available in the UK soon.
What is it?
A flexible ring, around 5.5cm in diametre, which
is inserted deep into the vagina. It is impregnated
with the same hormones that are found in the
pill, which are relased into the bloodstream
via vaginal mucus.
Who is it for?
For any woman who can use the pill, the ring
is an alternative, espcially if you easily forget
to take your pills. Woman who are at ease with
their bodies and happy to insert the ring deep
into the vagina.
How do you use it?
The NuvaRing is inserted into the vagina on
the first day of your period. It stays there
for three weeks, when it is removed, for seven
ring-free days, much in the same way as the
monthly break from the pill. A new one is inserted
on the eighth day, which stays in for another
three weeks, and so on.
One ring is used a month, with three weeks on
and a week off between each one.
