Slimmers lose more with Weight Watchers diet than NHS | ||||||
Studying 740 British dieters, researchers from the University discovered that the best results were achieved by slimmers at Weight Watchers. Losing an average of 4.4Kg over the three months compared to 1.4Kg by those treated by GPs - wow. However, Holly Finnegan, Nutritional expert at UK diet specialists All About Weight, comments: “Commercial diet plans are undoubtedly great but studies have shown that many subjects find it hard to maintain their weight loss and put the weight back on over a short period of time. The importance of behaviour modification and support cannot be overstated in the weight maintenance stages and studies show that the support given by commercial diet programmes are key for maintaining weight loss,” she said. This close support is where the programmes run by the NHS are lacking. Dr. Kate Jolly, leader of the Birmigham study comments ‘GPs should consider referring patients to commercial slimming groups rather than providing support in the practice’. The study further shows that slimmers who lost just seven pounds in weight could enjoy an extra year of life but that the weight loss has to be permanent. So if you're planning to shift those extra pounds this year make sure you keep them off, and commercial diet programmes could be the helping hand that you need! |

Hi there, I think the proof is in the pudding (probably fruit salad rather than sticky toffee though!) - well thought out diet plans work. Simple as that. Crash diets, fad diets and celeb diets often fail in in the long term. I think diets aren't just about eating - it's about community support, relationships with food, making informed dietary and lifestyle choices - that is where groups like Weightwatchers make sense. But you don't have to go to meetings in order to get support. These days there are lots of online sites which offer support through forums and chat areas. Like TLC http://bit.ly/lNojvs which is full of recipes and tips for staying on track and keeping healthy.
