Immense bottles of N°5 stood on the catwalk at the Grand Palais, where Karl Lagerfeld reaffirmed Chanel's supremacy and ability to push back its own boundaries.
Iconic 'Mademoiselle' suit jackets were given a new cut and tails with panels at the back which fell far below the front hemlines. Lagerfeld also used this length on ankle-sweeping riding-coats, though he also included the shorter hemlines he has shown in recent seasons.
Far from being austere, the fantastical pieces came in all colours: here a bright fuscia shift, there a leopard-print lining. A pair of floral lace tights lent femininity to a tweed ensemble, while show-stopping hats adorned with lace or paillettes harked back to the 20s.
Wrap dresses ended in a point, while Richelieu shoes, varnished or adorned with golden sequins, were visible through tulle trains.
For the finale, a young married couple emerged from one of the N°5 bottles, the bride innocent as a camellia in a short, romantic gown. The newlyweds exchanged a lingering kiss while Karl Lagerfeld appeared on the catwalk for his royal salute. All catwalk shows
