His reaction
You probably know how your guy usually reacts to bad news - but don't count on it. Prepare for a whole range of potential outcomes.
"The response will be one of three things," says Ariane. "Sadness, anger, or agreement that you were thinking the same thing."
In the latter case, you can breathe a bit of a sigh of relief, although it's likely you'll both still want to talk things through.
If things aren't mutual, brace yourself. "Be prepared for a range of reactions, from silence, to elongated conversations, to demands for explanations," advises Natalie.
Try to hold back and let him talk - Natalie suggests you should listen twice as much as you speak. "Even if he is disrespectful and rude to you, be as tolerant as you can," she explains. "We often lash out when we're hurt; it's an instinctive reaction, and is not intentional."
Most importantly, don't let the conversation end with any ambiguity. You don't want to give him false hope.
