Scarsdale Diet

The Scarsdale diet is an extremely restrictive two-week diet, developed by an American doctor. It cuts out carbohydrates, all fats, most dairy products, fruit juices, alcohol, sweets and puddings, chocolate and deli meat. The diet comes in several different versions - Foodie, Exotic, Economy and Vegetarian.

At the end of the two-week period, a stabilisation plan weans you gradually back onto more food, by adding three eggs a week, the two slices of bread a day, sugar-free jam, nuts and even a glass of wine!

Sample day's food:
Breakfast:
1/2 grapefruit, or fruit in season
1 slice toast, without spread or jam
Coffee or tea, no sugar, milk or cream
Lunch and Dinner:
Unrestricted meat or fish
Low-calorie vegetables, or salad
1 dessertspoon of essential fatty acids - olive or sunflower oil
Coffee or tea
Water
No deserts or snacks

This plan is perfectly safe over the short term, with enough protein, minerals and vitamins to keep you going.
Advertised weight loss is around 500g a day, but in reality, it is usually less.

The lack of fat and dairy produce can cause nutritional imbalances, if you go on the diet too often.
As with other diets which promise rapid weight loss, the weight will come straight back on, once you return to your normal eating habits!
