If you have dark skin and want it to look impeccable, follow our tips for perfectly tanned features.
What are the characteristics of a dark complexion?
Naturally golden, but sometimes with a few imperfections, often caused by the sun. Your skin may appear dull in grey weather.
The golden rule for perfect skin
If you want healthy, clean, radiant skin, you need to use make-up remover twice a day and apply a cream for your skin type (usually combination or oily). Exfoliate your face and neck from time to time to remove dead skin cells and restore your skin’s fine texture.
Make-up for your complexion
You want to create a natural effect. Go for radiance rather than transparence.
Choosing and applying make-up
Apply make-up in natural daylight to avoid getting the wrong shade.
The key is not to make your skin tone any darker.
Go for a corrective make-up base to cover up any little imperfections and prepare your skin for foundation. Use mauve or apricot for glow.
Choose a liquid foundation that’s slightly (but only slightly!) orange, in a shade close to your own skin tone. Don’t use very light shades, which will make your skin look dull. Apply with a brush to the centre of your face, out to the edges and then finish with the neck, making sure you don't get obvious lines.
Next, apply powder all over your face with a large round brush. Make light sweeping movements over the cheeks, forehead, nose and chin - all the areas that catch the sun first! For a healthy-looking finish, apply a touch of pink blusher to your cheeks.
Make-up for your skin tone
If you have a natural dark skin tone: apply an apricot base, choose foundation in a slightly orange shade to even out any greenish colour, and use natural golden powder.
If you have light mixed-race skin: use an apricot corrective base which will smooth over any little imperfections. Choose foundation which contains pigments that correct blemishes caused by the sun and ageing.
If you have black skin: apply an apricot base then a saffron bronzing powder all over the face, using a large brush.
