Glasses may be necessary but they also have purely aesthetic value and as accessories, they're as valuable as jewellery (but not always as easy to choose). Here's our guide to choosing specs and sunnies that suit your face shape.
Choice of shape
Choose your shape before your colour and style. Once you've found a shape that suits, you'll look great in any style.
Square faces
Go for round or oval frames. The curves soften the straight lines of your face.
Round faces
Go for square or angular frames to give your face structure. Don't add round shapes.
Oval faces
Rectangular and thick frames make oval faces wider and shorter. Oval faces have the easiest proportions to match and suit all frames as long as they don't lengthen your face.
Triangular faces
Choose oval frames with round upper edges - they're ideal for balancing pointed chins.
NB: If you have a prescription, don’t forget to show it to your optician before choosing your glasses. Some frames aren't available on prescription.
Tip:
The weight of the frames without the lenses should be enough to keep the glasses on your nose without causing any discomfort. Glasses shouldn't pinch the tip of your nose or leave marks. The arms should sit nicely on the ears. If they are curved the they should follow the shape of the ears and sit just behind them. Most arms can be adjusted.
Choice of colour
Choose the right colour for your skin tone. Remember to match your hair colour as well, and try on your everyday lippy to make sure it doesn't clash!
If you have a cool skin tone
Dare to try blue frames and complementary colours: white, shiny black, plum, magenta, pink and mauve. Go for enamel, brushed or shiny silver metallic frames. If you want tortoiseshell frames, choose dark and amber coloured frames. Green particularly suits redheads.
If you have a warm skin tone
Yellow is your colour, but khaki, navy, red, orange and ivory also work well, as do golden, brown, copper and bronze frames. Remember dark skin can get away with bright colours better.
