Wrapping up warm is vital in winter, but you don't want to resemble a bag lady. Here's our advice on dressing warmly but staying chic.
Don't
- Layer too much: Good layering (little top, cardigan or jumper and coat) is fine, but you don't want to look like a sack.
- Mix colours: The golden rule is no more than three colours per outfit.
- Wear only one colour or print: all black, red or tartan is never going to look good!
- Dress for the slopes: a combination of moon
boots, a puffa and gigantic socks is definitely a no-no.
- Summer clothes: Don't risk pneumonia in cotton dresses and linen trousers. Time to do your washing!
Must-have accessories
- Hats (berets, panamas, baseball caps, rasta hats...)
- Long woolly scarves
- Shawls and wraps (ethnic ones!)
- Woolly mittens (to match your
scarf)
- Tights (opaque, shiny lycra and ribbed wool)
Wrapping up in your style
Glam
- Pretty V-neck jumpers in wool or cashmere with retro prints. Think long for warmth, in purple, plum or grey.
- Black or grey slims and jeans.
- Cowboy or ankle boots.
- 80s-style straight-cut woolly coats.
- Cashmere wraps, silk scarves and leather gloves.
Casual
- A simple grey jumper or retro masculine cardi.
- Flared jeans for a Seventies look.
- Knee-high boots.
- A snug (but not too big) parka with a big hood and faux fur collar.
- Good accessories: a pretty long scarf round your neck and shoulders.
Sporty chic
- A long sweatshirt with a hood. Wear it like a dress just above the knees with a pair of woolly tights and boots.
- Wide cut dark jeans or grey or purple woolly tights are the colours this season!
- Bright vintage trainers.
- A short fitted puffa jacket in black with an 80s retro feel, or an arty jacket.
- Accessories: a rasta hat in wool worn with mittens and a scarf.
