Style icons who make the most of their assets
These ladies have done a great duty to the female cause by displaying their A-cups with pride and are noted style icons. Take some tips from:
Charlize Theron. The stunning South African actress says directors are reluctant to cast her in action films because she's no good at 'bouncy' scenes! But Charlize dresses so well on the red carpet that we barely notice there's anything lacking in the cleavage department. The Oscar-winning star always looks stunning in figure-hugging gowns, especially white and lacy numbers.
Keira Knightley. The super-skinny Atonement star has never let her lack of rack stop her from donning plunging dresses and was outraged when US promoters digitally enhanced her chest for posters of her film King Arthur.
Paris Hilton. The hotel heiress admits to having had insecurities about her flat chest as a teenager, but says she's now happy with her size and would never resort to surgery. Paris is anything but understated, but by wearing bold colours and clothes that make a statement, she diverts attention away from her cleavage.
Twiggy. The original supermodel doesn't have a model cleavage, but she became an icon with her mini-skirts, coloured tops and waifish beauty. The mini-dress was made for her.
Audrey Hepburn. Audrey was the first fashion icon to prove that you can look glam in a buster dress even if you don't have Marilyn Monroe's ample chest and baby blues. The beautiful brunette invented her own classy style of straight trousers, a simple black sweater and ballet pumps into a fashion staple.
Kate Moss. Kate may be a twiglet, but she still gets away with sleeveless gilets and nothing underneath, plunging long V-neck dresses and countless other looks flat-chested ladies usually shy away from. She's living proof you can be angrogynous and sexy.
How to cheat
- Push-up bras
Padded push-up bras are a flat-chested woman's best friend. They lift and enhance breasts gently to give you a real confidence boost up front. Wear under cotton tees, V-necks, polo neck sweaters, suits and blouses.
- Balcony bras
These have cushioning to give even the smallest breasts lift and add the illusion of a cup size. Balcony bras look fantastically glam under rounded low-cut tops and sculpt and enhance small chests really well.
Hide a small bust in...
- Polo necks
Black and dark-coloured polos are winter staples. Be careful of the fabric: tight-fitting polos should look like a second skin, while wooly versions are looser and more masculine. Polos look romantic teamed with a skirt.
- Strapless dresses
The strapless dress is your little black dress. A Fifties cut in semi-rigid fabric shows just enough and looks really feminine. It suits all body shapes and creates a real illusion of a generous bust by nipping the waist in. Go for knee-length with cute open-toed heels.
Display your small chest in...
- Empire-line dresses
Empire lines reveal the top of your bust and envelop your chest, so even if you're flat as a pancake on top you'll look as if you have bigger assets! Go for empire lines with thin straps that flare out under your bust and make you feel much lighter, especially if you're heavy-hipped.
- Suits
Classic suits can be tastefully layered to create the illusion of a bigger bust. A bright blue or striped blouse with a little jacket with nipped-in waist over a pencil skirt is sexy for work and shows you don't need DDs to look good!
- Bustiers
Bustier tops or dresses reveal sexy shoulders and the top of the bust (areas we often hide) in all their glory. They're a wardrobe must-have and give guaranteed va-va-voom, even just worn with a simple gilet and jeans.
Dare to bare your small chest in...
- Cashmere sweaters
A cashmere sweater can be slipped on over bare skin if you're in a rush. Cashmere is soft, protective and hangs off slim shoulders elegantly. Choose a slightly large sweater in a soft colour, and wear with your hair in a half-down bun and dangly earrings.
- Plunging V-necks
V-necks flatter small chests. In winter, opt for a cashmere sweater with a plunging V-neck and team with jeans. You can even go braless and you'll look even sexier (one of the advantages of being small-breasted!). In summer, wear V-neck T-shirts with less plunging necklines, but with a push-up bra to add oomph.
- White blouses
Again, less-than-generous cleavages can wear these easily. If your hips are on the heavy side, go for a loose blouse for a more flowing look. If you're very svelte, opt for a slightly large blouse worn over jeans with the top buttons undone, and pretty heels.
- Sleeveless gilets
If you have a boyish, androgynous figure, you can experiment with the masculine look to your heart's content. Wear gilets over a T-shirt or with straight-legged trousers, or with a shirt, oversized trousers and maybe even a pair of braces.
