Jewellery adds colour to your complexion and brightens up your outfits. It reflects who you are, as well as your style, and complements your make-up. How can you be sure you’re matching up the right jewellery and clothes? Follow our advice to help you get the combination right.
Clashes to avoid
- Thick woolly sweaters and ornate/dangly rings or earrings that may snag!
- If you’re full-figured, avoid wearing too much jewellery at once as it will make you look heavier.
- Graphic prints and big stones together are too much.
- Large, short necklaces with detailed high collars such as Peter Pan collars.
- Luxurious or shiny materials like velvet and big stones will make you look like a jewellery box.
Matching your jewellery to your colouring and to the season!
Depending on the season, some jewellery and colours suit you more than others... find out which suit your colouring and your best season.
- Spring: Light brown hair, maybe with red or golden highlights, a golden complexion that tans easily, and green, blue or hazel eyes.
Jewellery: Go for yellow gold to bring out the highlights in your skin and hair. Choose blue or orange stones like turquoise, amethyst or sapphire.
Colours for clothes: Choose warm tones like brown, gold and orange, as well as light pastel green, blue or ivory. Avoid black, white, maroon and navy blue.
- Summer: Blonde hair, fair skin and blue or green eyes.
Jewellery: Opt for white gold or silver, very precious stones like diamonds or rubies. Yellow gold jewellery won’t necessarily flatter your skin tone.
Colours for clothes: Go for luminous colours: raspberry, red, turquoise, plum or yellow. Avoid orange. Grey or off-white also suit you very well.
- Autumn: Auburn or ginger hair, freckled skin and brown or green eyes.
Jewellery: Yellow or pink gold, leather, and coral or amber stones.
Colours for clothes: Warm tones to flatter your complexion: bright red, petrol blue, caramel, bronze, salmon, khaki green or bright blue. You should avoid black, navy and pink.
- Winter: Light brown, dark brown or black hair, a pale, ivory or porcelain complexion, or a very dark, olive or peach one, brown, blue-green or grey-blue eyes.
Jewellery: Cold tones, white gold, silver and precious stones like diamonds and rubies.
Colours for clothes: Bright! Red, yellow, royal blue, fuchsia pink, and black and white too.
How to wear your jewellery
Necklaces
Close to the neck, necklaces look particularly good with a round neck which exposes your chest. They’re also perfect with a bustier and small earrings. Avoid tight choker-style necklaces that have been old-fashioned for a while now. Instead, go for necklaces with a pendant that falls in line with your breasts to lengthen your bust. Long necklaces are ideal with dark outfits and they go well with natural flowing materials like cotton, bamboo or light wool.
Ethnic jewellery
Ethnic jewellery is often made from unrefined metal and the stones aren’t very detailed. To make the jewellery stand out but keep it natural, go for neutral colours like beige, white or brown, and simple cuts. Avoid combining wooden jewellery with prints - no-one will see your jewellery.
Bracelets
Ankle bracelets look great with a skirt or a long, boho-style dress. So that you don’t weigh your figure down too much, wear flat shoes that show your feet a little, like sandals, flip-flops or ballet pumps. Bangles slim down the wrist. With a wide-sleeved top, go for several simple metal bangles. With a tight top, go for just one rather large one. Cuff bracelets that encircle the wrist and forearm emphasise the forearms when teamed with a one-shoulder top.
Earrings
Long, fine earrings should be worn with a turtleneck or V-neck because they have a slimming effect on your figure. Hoop earrings are prettier in yellow gold or platinum. Gold emphasises their solar shape. With dangly or bold drop earrings, keep an open neck but don't wear a necklace.
Brooches
Brooches can liven up jackets, sweaters and tunics. Pin to thick materials only.
On a narrow-fitting, black woollen coat, wear a gold or silver brooch with little charms for a vintage look. To add a feminine touch to a big sweater, pin a little colourful brooch to the collar. With a woollen or rigid linen tunic, go for a colourful plastic brooch.
Rings
Make sure you don’t overload your hands with rings, especially if you’re wearing colourful clothing.
With a dark-coloured, long-sleeved top, go for rings with coloured stones. With a puff-sleeved top or shirt, go for precious metals and discreet rings to flatter your hands.
Hairbands and hairgrips
Hair accessories dress up your hair like jewellery.
With a baby-doll dress, wear a large colourful hairband.
With a black dress or suit, go for a little shiny tiara in loose hair.
If you’re wearing a white shirt, use a few decorative metal grips in your bun.
