A Darker Shade Of Pale: Hair Colour Trends for Autumn/Winter 09/10

It's all change! As the evenings get darker, so it seems are hair colour trends. Heralded by celebrities opting for dramatic dye jobs, dark locks are a key trend this season. MARIAN BUCKLEY reports.

A while back the fashion world was buzzing with news that 'green is the new black' as the collective conscience of the fashion industry was pricked and ethical issues began to be taken seriously by the mainstream. This season, in the beauty world, it could be said the black is the new blonde as darker, dramatic hair colour shades move into the spotlight.

Leigh Lezark, the DJ, designer muse and face of Mango, may be a natural blonde, but she's committed to dying her hair a slick shade of black which almost matches Agyness Deyn's new jet black locks. Dark tresses are also a favourite of arguably the UK's biggest style icon of the moment, Alexa Chung. Her MTV show It's On With Alexa Chung has been a stateside sensation, although she's still managing to spend some time in the UK and will be turning her talents to DJing at the Burberry Party during London Fashion Week.

Lily Allen's hair has been a multitude of shades including shocking flamingo pink and bleached blonde. For a while the singer has been sporting darker shades and currently is going for sharp-looking longer length black locks. If you are naturally fair, a full-on move to black could make you look a little drained and washed out.

Cheryl Cole's flirtatious affair with red along with Peaches Geldof's recent choice of shade has fuelled rumours that reddish plums will dominate. This look won't suit everyone! If you are changing your hair colour this season, make sure you seek some professional advice. A good colourist at any reputable salon wil be able to advise you on which shades will suit your skin tone. Remember that conditioning is really important when using any colourants, whether it be salon or a home application. Think also about your choice of make-up: darker locks this season reflect the smokey dark-eyed make-up trends, but sometimes less is more. A touch of eyeliner, a brush of mascara and a slash of red lips can prove the most effective way to make your dark locks work to maximum effect.
