Born HIV Free - The Global Fund's campaign to end mother-to-child transmission of HIV

Mother-to-child transmission of HIV has been practically eradicated in Europe, North America and other industrialised countries throughout the world. However, in developing countries 430,000 children are born with HIV every year, that's more than 1,000 children a day. The campaign's main message is: "We can put a stop to this in the next five years. A world where children are BORN HIV FREE is now possible".

Thanks to modern medicine and the procedures that currently exist, the chances of an HIV-positive pregnant woman passing the virus on to her child can be reduced to less than 2%. But if she doesn't receive any treatment, the chances of having an HIV positive baby are between 20% and 40%.
 
Last year in France only 4 children were born with HIV (transmitted by their mother). In Africa, during the same period, almost 400,000 children were born with the virus. Access to prevention services and treatment is what makes the difference.
