As my family aren't religious Christmas is more a time to celebrate family, friendships and food.

On Christmas morning, my parents, sister, brother and I all pile into the living room in our pyjamas to see if Father Christmas has been...

I may be pushing 30, but it's still nice to see the mince pie we left by the chimney has been eaten, along with the carrots we put out for the reindeer. We have a glass of bucks fizz with our toast and tea.

From about midday we start on the mulled wine, sparkling wine or more tea.

We always share Christmas with the family of my Dad's best friend who died a few years back, my aunt, uncle and grandmother and usually a few extras too - boyfriends, girlfriends, random waiths and strays.

For dinner we have a choice of three starters: salmon, prawns or vegetarian meze. The main course is a traditional roast with a choice of Turkey, Ham or Vegetarian cranberry and chestnut loaf.

We normally need a break at this point so we put the hats on and tell the bad jokes. My Dad normally choses this moment to make some kind of embarassing but heartfelt speech.

Everyone brings dessert so there's usually three or four choices on top of the traditional Christmas pudding.

And finally we have a cheese board. After dinner, we play, often silly games while sipping Sherry or Port. Finally everyone collapses on squiggy sofas in front of the fire and watches a movie or snoozes.
