James Kaliardos, L’Oréal:
Go from the base of your lashes so that you enhance your roots. Lifting the upper eyelid with a finger, brush under and then apply your colour. Don't put too much on your brush otherwise you'll end up with a heavy look, and start from the roots to get a black line - it's more dramatic. Don't go over the top on the ends if you don't want a spidery look.
Patrick Lorentz, Estée Lauder:
You want your lashes to be like your hair when you've been to the salon: well-separated out at the roots, with glossy tips! To get it right, you need to angle your brush so that you can put your hand on your jawbone. Don't be afraid of putting your brush right in your eye! Tilt your head backwards, and then apply small touches to the roots before zig-zagging over the whole length.
