Dr Martine Baspeyras, dermatologist.
Q: Would you recommend the use of self-tanning products?
A: Self tan is a good idea for all skin types, as starting out with more colour discourages people from spending too much time in the sun itself. Self tan users tend to expose themselves less often and build up their natural tans more slowly than others, which is much better for the skin. They also give people more confidence to expose their bodies, without using dangerous sunbeds.
Q: Have you got any self-tanning advice?
A: I recommend a thorough body scrub before application for best results, as it removes dead skin cells for a more even colour. For a better-quality tan, eat plenty of lycopene and carotene-rich foods, such as tomatoes, carrots and apricots.
