We all know that the sun causes premature ageing, lines and wrinkles, but it is also behind the liver spots and irregular pigmentation that are often put down to age. 30% of women over the age of 40 have dark patches or liver spots in the most sensitive areas of the body, like the face, chest and hands, which are also the most exposed to the sun. Pale patches are rarer, but they do occur. All sun-related pigmentation of this type is irreversible.
As Dr Véronique Delvigne, Scientific Director at Lancôme says: «Weakened over time, with hormonal deficiencies and repeated exposure to the sun, mature skins are fragile and liver spots are common. Effective UV protection is essential not just to guard against cellular disorders, but also as a preventative action against the ageing effects of UV rays on the skin.”
