Hugh, you told (director) Marc Lawrence that you didn’t want to sing in the film, you didn’t want to dance and you didn’t want to play an instrument. You ended up doing all three. Explain!
Hugh Grant
Yes, at the start I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into! My musical achievements ended at the age of 9 when I did a year of piano. But I had fantastic coaches, one of whom was Michael Rafter. I started on the singing then bit by bit learned the piano. Once I’d started I couldn’t stop: it became almost an obsession! The best bit was the choreography with Dan Karaty. I studied the style and look of the sort of British pop groups we modelled Alex on, and we also stole from Tom Jones too. It was hilariously funny and exciting, and the result is pretty good, don’t you think?
soFem: We certainly do!
