Spider-Man 3 brings out a dark side to Tobey Maguire's character Peter. What do you think of the decision to do that?
The new dimension to his character is very interesting. The director decided to push the story into quite a quite deep but sublte psychological dimension. It's not just Spiderman proving himself: you see all his doubts and his ambivalent side too.
What about big romance between Spidey and your character Mary Jane?
There's always been a big love story going on with Mary Jane, but it's complicated. How do you love someone as a man and as Spider-Man? And Spider-Man is also kind of like warrior, you know, the type who could end up dead or run off with another girl - the life he has, he's always in a hurry. They both live on a knife-edge. It's exhausting, loving someone like him, but they're very passionate!
Would it be a bit like, say, going out with one of today's up-and-coming rock stars?! Oh, Spiderman's more than a rock star - he's a super hero!
Do you think Mary Jane is just as heroic as Spider-Man in her own way?
Of course she is, because she's a girl in the stages of becoming a woman, trying to grow up and find her place in life, and she has the courage to start up a relationship with a guy who can't always be there for her when she needs him. She supports him in a very selfless way and even forgives him some of his faults, because she admires him a lot.
Who are your real-life super-heroes?
My mom, my friends, Joni Mitchell, Carl Sagan (astronomer), Magnetic Fields (rock band). Oh and Barack Obama (US Democrat candidate for the presidency). I'm going all red now!
You're quite open about your political views, aren't you?
Yeah, everyone know's I'm a Democrat. I admire Hillary Cinton as much as Barack Obama, but I'm very taken with him!
