British film Slumdog Millionaire was top dog, scooping 7 awards including Best Film and Best Director for Trainspotting star Danny Boyle. The Mumbai-set film is proving to be this year's surprise success. Bring on the Oscars...
Speaking of Academy Awards, only the Oscar now eludes Briain's leading lady Kate Winslet, who won the Best Actress BAFTA for The Reader (she was also nominated for Revolutionary Road). After her Gwyneth-esque acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, Jonathan Ross had warned Kate: "Just in case emotion does get the better of you...we've asked the Thames people to raise the flood barrier." Kate dedicated her award to The Reader producers Sydney Pollack and Anthony Minghella, who passed away before the film's release.
Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) capped his incredible comeback by taking home the gong for Best Actor, and out-swore Jonathan Ross in a highly-bleeped acceptance speech. Best Supporting Actor went to the late Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight) and Best Supporting Actress to Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona).
