© Margarett Skinner / Aprifel | With around 40 calories per 100g, the peach is one of the least calorific fruits. Very refreshing thanks to its high water content (87%), just sweet enough with a moderate amount of carbohydrate (9%) and sweetly acidic with a very low fruit acid content (0.6 to 0.7%), peaches are perfect for hot summer days.
Best eaten ripe, they're easy to digest. Peaches contain 2% fibre and are soft, so they pass easily and quickly through the intestines. Peeled, poached or blended, they're great for babies.
Peaches contain a great deal of Vitamin B, particularly vitamins B3 (1 mg/100g) and B5 (0.16mg/100g). One peach contains between 8 and 10 mg of Vitamin C, which is around 10 to 12% of your RDA. This is boosted by flavanoid pigments (which give the peach its orange colour). Peaches also contain a healthy dose of Provitamin A, or carotene, which is well-known for its antioxidant properties and benefits for the skin.
