Over the last 50 years or so, healthier and lighter versions of our favourite tipples have really taken off: for practically every drink you can buy there's a diet alternative. The discovery of sweeteners and flavourings has led to a greater variety of products available. There's also loads of calorie-free or and reduced-sugar flavoured water and fizzy drinks.

Our nutritionist says: "Obviously there's nothing better for you than ordinary water to quench your thirst. It's better to go for a reduced-calorie drink than a sugary one, but not too often - they're always going to be worse for you than water and if you're not careful you'll get used to the sugary taste and start to crave it."
