Footwear is the most important piece of equipment you need for running, so don't skimp on the quality. Don't run in just any old trainers: get a pair that are specially designed for running.
How to choose a good pair of running shoes:
> Shape and movement: Running shoes should be adapted to your feet. If the inner side of your foot is low and the outer side of your foot is raised, they're too tight, and if it's the other way round they're too loose. If your foot is stable, you've got it spot on. Don't spend hours deliberating: in a proper sports shop you can ask an assistant to tell you if they fit well or not.
> Cushioning: Most of the big brands who manufacture running shoes make them with effective cushioning. Cushioning is vital because your body has to absorb 4 times its own weight with every step you take while you're running, which puts a lot of strain on your feet!
> Safety: Good running shoes should have anti-slip soles. They should also be robust all over so that they can stand up to different types of terrain.
> Comfort: They have to be comfy, so make sure you try several pairs on before deciding which is best for you. If your feet get very hot or you're going to be running in hot weather, go for a pair that let your feet breathe.
