Driving should be about enjoyment...as long as you stick to the Highway Code, of course! Fancy becoming a whiz at the wheel? Learn to master your car by following racing instructor Anthony's professional advice:
- Always keep your hands at quarter past nine on the steering wheel. You shouldn't cross your hands or take them off the wheel. This gives you full control of your vehicle, especially in unexpected situations when you might need to swerve to avoid a ball or an animal in the road.
- Don't be afraid of braking. A large number of accidents are caused by drivers not using their brakes.
- Be on your guard. Your perception of danger will be quicker and you'll be able to react in time. In an emergency situation, it's your involuntary reactions that count the most.
- Use your car's power wisely. There's no point stepping on the gas simply for the thrill of a quick burst of speed (it's dangerous and illegal). However, it's essential when you're overtaking: once you're sure there's no-one coming up in front or behind (including in your blind spot), change gear then pull out, accelerating fully before pulling back into your lane at a higher speed.
