Officially (at the Olympics and various competitions), beach volleyball is played 2 against 2. However, on beaches, the teams are often larger (up to 6 players on each side like in indoor volleyball) in order to let more people join in.
Practically as large as an indoor court, the outside court is 8 by 16 metres. The net is 2.43m high for men and 2.24m high for women.
The game is played in 2 sets of 21 points each, and there needs to be a gap of 2 points to win a set. If necessary, a deciding tie-break to 15 points is played.
The ball can be hit with any part of the body: hands, head, thighs and even feet! A maximum of three passes are allowed before the ball has to go back over the net.
