Birth of the trench coat

The first trench coats were waterproof and usually calf-length. They were used by several countries' armies during the First and Second World Wars.

The trench is not to be confused with the duster, which is usually longish, brown or cream with a cape on the back and was worn by cowboys in the Wild West.
