There's an unlikely story behind the Lacoste crocodile/alligator label, as with many iconic brands’ logos. In 1927, tennis player René Lacoste made a bet with the captain of the French Davis Cup team: "He promised me an alligator-skin suitcase if I won a really big match for our team." Tenacious Lacoste won the match and earned himself the nickname Le Crocodile. "The public must have liked it because it described the way I played: I was tenacious and never let go of my prey!”
Lacoste's friend Robert George designed a crocodile logo for René Lacoste which he wore embroidered on his blazer from then on...and the Lacoste label was born.
