 © Piaget | - For a long time, South Africa was the world's largest gold producer. In the 70s, it was responsible for almost 70% of all gold mining. Nowadays, it supplies no more than 15%.
- 158,000 tonnes of gold have been extracted since prehistoric times, of which 65% has been extracted since 1950.
- The main gold consumers are India, China, the United States, Japan, Saudia Arabia and Italy.
- The largest ever gold nugget was discovered in 1872 in Australia. It weighed 235kg and was 1.42 metres long.
- 70% of the demand for gold comes from the jewellery sector.
