In India, 80% of jewellery is made of yellow gold. According to the World Gold Council, India "is the world's largest consumer of gold jewellery by volume, accounting for 20% of global consumption."

This level of consumption, which has increased as India has become richer, is driven by cultural and religious traditions. Indians believe gold has the power to purify and ward off bad luck.

During weddings and festivals, women adorn themselves with bracelets complete with tinkling bells, candelabra earrings and elaborate necklaces.
