First things first: medical examination

There are many different and successful types of fertility treatment, IVF being the most well-known. Around 8,000 babies are born each year through IVF. However, before you start considering your options, you need to find out the cause of your fertility problems by getting a thorough medical check-up, and getting your partner to do the same. Your GP can then refer you to a fertility clinic.

Women
Tests may include:
- temperature tests (to check your ovulation is regular)
- ultrasound scan
- blood tests
- examination for abnormalities
- hysterosalpingogram (examens the uterus and fallopian tubes)

Most sterility or fertility problems actually stem from abnormalities of the fallopian tubes or from endometriosis (an abnormality of the uterus wall).

Men
Blood tests and sperm tests (to determine the quantity and quality of his sperm).
