Causes of accidents, safety, children |

Swimming pools are a real danger for children: in June 2006, 20% of cases of fatal drowning took place in swimming pools and 5 children under six lost their lives.
The main cause of such tragic accidents is a lack of vigilance. Small children are very quick: if you take your eyes of them for just one moment, it's enough time for them to get to the water's edge and decide the water looks inviting. Children under six can't swim yet, and you have to remember that their brains aren't developed enough to let them co-ordinate their arms and legs and stay afloat in the water.
If there are no security measures at your pool, the risk of fatal accidents is greater. Lifebelts, covers, protection barriers around the edges and alarm systems are all used. If you're renting a holiday home or flat, make sure the pool is properly equipped with security measures.
