Treatment of fever

Before giving your child medicine to reduce his fever (an antipyretic), some simple steps can be taken which may be enough to lower his temperature.

> get your child to drink regularly.
> don't overheat the bedroom (19°C is the ideal temperature for a child's room) .
> remove extra layers of clothing and bedding so that heat can escape, but make sure your child doesn't get cold.

In the past, it was recommended to bath your child in tepid water (with a temperature 2°C lower than the child's body temperature) to bring a fever down. New recommendations no longer advise this because this bath often makes the child feel worse. But if the child likes taking a bath, if it calms and comforts him, then it's OK.
